I've read that scotch has a similar variety of subtle flavors, but I can't afford the good stuff.

I'll go for Scotch in a pinch, but Vodka's really my preferred option.

I only know two types of vodka: good & bad. The good kind is usually too expensive for me & the bad kind makes me ill.

I've had one hangover in my life, and that was from cheap whiskey and beer.
Vodka, however has presided over some quite enjoyable moments.

Yes, clear liquor produces fewer hangovers. Brown liquor &, to a lesser extent, beer contain trace amounts of methyl alcohol in addition to the "safer" ethyl. Ethyl alcohol metabolises to acetaldehyde which is less destructive than the metabolic result of methyl alcohol which is formaldehyde. Drinking plenty of water during alcohol consumption prevents or lessens most hangover symptoms
